The following letter was sent to
all the Chapter Chiefs and Advisors:
Chapters, the Service Committee needs your help for
two programs this year, they are both described below. Any questions about the programs or life in general can be
directed to Curtis Bradley, Allen Thompson, or Kenneth Pekarek.
One Day of Service
This year our lodge plans to participate in the One
Day of Service. This is a
day where all the lodges in the Southern Region perform service for
their communities. The
day of service was supposed to be November 17th, but there
were many conflicts with this date, mainly Scouting for Food.
So instead of abandoning the program, the Executive Committee
decided to do a day of service Saturday December 1st, and
instead of making it a lodge activity, have the chapters perform
service in their own communities so people unwilling to come to camp
for just one day can still be involved.
Because we are doing this later than the section day of service
it is important that we get our report in quickly, so please fill out
the enclosed form (which can also be found at
http://www.sr5.org/files/onedaycloseout.pdf
) as soon as your are finished and send it to:
Curtis
Bradley (address not published on the web)
To quote the section, “The service project should
not be to the camp or be done for any amount of money, don’t forget,
cheerful service!” If you
have problems finding a service project, email me at
kennethp@email.unc.edu, or
call me at 704-460-7124, I have plenty of ideas.
Scoutreach Mentoring
Program
The OA website describes Scoutreach as:
The Order of Arrow Scoutreach Mentoring Program is
a joint effort of the national Scoutreach Division of the Boy Scouts
of America and the Order of the Arrow. Its purpose is to identify and
assist urban and rural Scout troops whose camping and advancement
programs are below standard.
This is the year for Scoutreach to start in Eswau
Huppeday. In order to get
the ball rolling, the troops to be assisted must be recognized, and a
list of mentors must be made.
In order to assess the troops that will benefit from the
program, we ask that you, the Chapter, contact your District
Executive, Council Advancement Committee, and the Commissioners Staff
to pick the troops in need of assistance.
Some examples of troops in need of assistance are: new troops,
troops with low camping or a lack of advancement, troops not involved
in council activities, or troops that do not retain members.
A list of possible Mentors must be developed.
Enclosed is a Mentor application form (also located at
http://www.oa-bsa.org/programs/scoutreach/OASRwwApplication.pdf).
Once troops have been picked and a list of possible mentors
have been made the program can move forward.
Please report any progress/problems to Curtis Bradley
(704-434-3873). And for
more information visit
http://www.oa-bsa.org/programs/scoutreach/
or contact Curtis Bradley, Allen Thompson, or Kenneth Pekarek.
Best of luck and Happy Holidays,
