Hunting Island State Park

About:
This popular state park, located near historic Beaufort, is a 5,000-acre secluded barrier island of semitropical beauty.
As the name implies, the island was once used for hunting deer, raccoon, waterfowl and other small game.
Editor's comments:
This park's primitive campgrounds is about a half mile from the beach. A short hike along the beach leads to a historical lighthouse and other attractions. Swimming in the ocean is always fun. If you intend to cook over the fire be sure to pack in some charcoal or your own wood. There is a lack of hardwoods nearby and cooking on pine or palm is very ineffective. If you go in the summer months Be Prepared for mosquitoes. Long sleeves and repellent are musts. Star gazing on the beach at night offers a break from the bugs and heat.
Things to do:
Hiking, boating, fishing, swimming, and biking.
